When it comes to sleep, it seems that bigger is not always better. There has been a trend recently for 'pod' type hotels and sleep solutions across the world and Abu Dhabi International Airport is one of the latest spots to succumb to the draw of the diminutive design. This week a number of GoSleep chairs were made available to passengers that can offer complete seclusion from the hustle and bustle of the airport.

The chairs were designed in Finland and include a sliding roof that can be pulled down to completely or in part enclose the passenger inside. A total of ten GoSleep chairs have been situated in Terminal 3 of the airport and ten in the Lounge at Terminal 1. Plans are to install a further 35 later on in the year. Eventually the pods will have internet access, secure storage for luggage and valuables and power to fuel electronic devices. At the current time each pod is paid for using a credit card at a rate of around £8 per hour.

While Japan has long been known for its love of pod style accommodation, the trend has certainly spread quickly around the globe. Recently The Yotel Chain, from the makers of the Yo! Sushi chain of Japanese fast food has started making an impact in the UK. Both Gatwick and Heathrow now have their own capsule hotel thanks to this chain which is also now available in New York and Amsterdam.

Russia too is in on the trend for these mini marvels. In the last few months Moscow opened its first capsule hotel, the Sleepbox aimed at those not needing the full facilities of a hotel. The 50 room hotel may provide all mod cons in just ten square metres but the one thing it doesn't have is windows. Not the ideal choice for travellers wanting a room with view although it does have internet access and full sound proofing to enable guests to switch off, even if just for an hour or two.

Barcelona Airport too has its own edition of the compact hotel. Its local Dream and Fly Company installed a series of 'modular bedrooms' referred to as Bubbles in the airport. These are available in three sizes with some just about large enough to provide lodgings for a family also come complete with a bathroom, LCD TV and folding table.
