Those travellers watching their pennies should consider Hungarian capital, Budapest, according to findings in a study by the Post Office this week. The research conducted among 25 different popular city break destinations revealed that holiday makers' cash went further in the city than elsewhere.

Researchers compiled a shopping list of twelve expenses that are typical of a city break and compared like for like prices across the 25 compared cities. The expenses included dining out, hotel and a city tour. Budapest came in at just £134.76 while Copenhagen came in as Europe's most expensive destination in the study at £440.45. Central and North Eastern Europe appears to offer travellers the most value for money this year with Lithuania and Warsaw coming in close second and third in the cost comparison.

When examining prices year on year, costs for British travellers overseas were up in almost 90 per cent of cities although this is unsurprising given the pound's current performance against a large proportion of other currencies. Compared against the previous year cities presenting the greatest price rise to British tourists included Stockholm which was up a huge 33 per cent while Boston, USA was up by 28 per cent. By converse reductions were seen in Lisbon where prices were down by around 19 per cent and also Berlin which was down by just 1.5 per cent.

When quizzed about which city break they would opt for if the cost was irrelevant, respondents opted for New York, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro.

Choosing to travel to a cheaper city break destination though doesn't mean that tourists have to compromise on the quality of their stay. Budapest is regarded as one of Central Europe's most beautiful cities. The city's architecture combines buildings from a number of eras including Baroque and Art Deco. Greenery is in abundance too with plenty of parks and lakes nestled among the city's buildings. The Danube River passes through the city providing an opportunity to enjoy the sites from a different perspective on a river cruise. Cuisine in the area is of a high standard and experts rate the local wine too. Budapest offers a bustling and varied nightlife too set against a backdrop of the romantic architecture. Hungary's capital is also a welcoming place diverse in culture. Perhaps the delights of this Central European capital will be even sweeter to travellers knowing they have got the best price too.
