things to do in Mykonos

If you are taking a trip to Mykonos then you are guaranteed a fun-filled holiday in beautiful surroundings. The island has a reputation as something of a party hotspot and whilst it is true that there is plenty of nightlife, there are lots of other activities here too. Whether you are travelling with friends on your discount holidays to Greece, or as a family, check out Monster's list of the five best things to do in Mykonos.

Monastery of Panagia Tourliani

The hilltop church of Panagia Paraportiani is undoubtedly one of the most famous buildings in Mykonos but it is not the only religious site worth a look. Whereas many Greek buildings are whitewashed and typically feature blue roofs, the monastery of Panagia Tourliani has an unusual bronze coloured example. The marble bell tower is stunning but it is the artwork inside that really sets this monastery apart. The altar screen is elaborately adorned with biblical scenes and icons of saints, making a trip to this cool and tranquil sanctuary well worth it.

See the windmills

These iconic structures are one of the island’s most memorable sights. There are sixteen windmills on the island, a few of which have been converted into accommodation. The main cluster can be found on a hilltop near Chora. With their squat towers and spindly sails, they look like something from a Tim Burton fairy-tale. Nevertheless, these enchanting buildings are quirky, visually stunning and definitely make for some interesting pictures.

Get active

There is plenty of spectacular countryside to enjoy here and a number of ways in which to experience it. Mountain bike hire is widely available with routes and destinations to suit all ages and abilities. For those who prefer a less strenuous option, most hotels can arrange the rental of four-wheeled ATVs or all-terrain vehicles.

Take a beach safari

Whilst lying around in the sun is an important element of a holiday for many of us, there is more to do in Mykonos than simply lazing about on the sand. Why not see the island from a different perspective with a beach safari? Many operators offers tours that stop off at various locations along the coast to allow guests to snorkel or scuba dive. Some also include excursions to nearby islands of historical interest such as Delos.

Enjoy outdoor cinema

The beauty of such a temperate climate is that plenty of indoor activities can be enjoyed outside. During the summer, one of the nicest ways in which to spend an evening is to attend a film screening at the outdoor cinema. Cine Manto, located in beautiful botanical gardens in Chora, shows a wide variety of films, each in their original language with additional Greek subtitles. Make a real evening of it by enjoying a meal at the stunning outdoor restaurant. Mykonos offers so much more than a typical beach vacation so why not try some our must-do activities to really make the most of your break.
