Limassol is renowned in Cyprus for its wine. One of the many highlights of the year is the Limassol Wine Festival.

Limassol Wine Festival

Cyprus is a popular tourist destination with much to recommend it, including great weather, gorgeous beaches, stunning landscapes and a vibrant club scene. But the food and drink are also exceptional here and the island has developed a well-deserved reputation for its wine. For those contemplating discount holidays to Cyprus, the Limassol Wine festival is one of the largest events on the island and a celebration that attracts many thousands of visitors.

Celebrating old traditions

The Limassol Wine festival takes place every year during the last week of August and first week of September. Held in the Municipal Gardens close to the seafront, this is where locals and tourist alike mark the end of summer with a huge party. Dedicated to the Greek god of wine, Dionysus, the festival is a celebration of the produce that this island has to offer. Visitors can try a range of different wines from the various local vineyards, as well as learning more about the way in which they are produced. As you enter the festival you can’t help but notice the enormous statue of Vraka Man, dressed in the baggy trousers or vraka, that are part of traditional Cypriot dress. There is even some traditional grape treading.

Fun for all ages

Although the main focus of the festival is wine, there are other activities that everyone can enjoy. In addition to sampling the various wines from around the island there is plenty of traditional Cypriot food to try. Examples include live bouzouki music to get you in the party mood and displays of traditional folk dancing. You might even be tempted to have a go yourself! A highlight for 2016 is an exhibition of photographs that were submitted last year for a competition with a wine theme. Puppet shows, storytelling, live theatrical performances and colourful fireworks round off the event. Getting to the festival is easy. Free buses are provided by the Cypriot Tourism Organisation to transport visitors from all over the island. Ticket prices are usually around 6 or 7 Euros, with reduced rates for teenagers and younger children. Adult entry to the festival include a generous amount of free wine. Visit the Limassol Wine Festival to see why Cyprus is quite rightly proud of its produce.
