A trip to the Grand Canyon: the basics

Meandering for an astonishing 277 river miles through Arizona, the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly one of the largest natural wonders of the world. In places this two billion year old crevice is an incredible one mile deep and up to eighteen miles wide. The stunning shapes, colours and patterns created by aeons of erosion make this a truly remarkable sight. It is worth timing your visit: sunrise and sunset are among the most popular times as the shadows are quite astonishing but in truth the Grand Canyon is memorable and awe-inspiring at any time.

Viewing the Canyon

There are two main sites from which visitors can view the Canyon. The most popular option is to visit the South Rim, which is open all year round and has free shuttle buses to help visitors get about. Here you will also find a Visitor Centre with informative videos and interactive planners as well as the opportunity to rent bikes or book a guided tour. The North Rim is rather less accessible and has an elevation of around 8200 feet. The cooler air makes for a very different perspective and landscape but the visiting season is much shorter, running only from May to October.

When you’re there

As with any trail walk, don’t forget to follow basic safety precautions such as telling people where you are going, taking plenty of water and sticking to recognised routes. There are plenty of different ways in which you can experience the Canyon, whether you choose to walk, cycle, river run, raft or even ride a mule. A day trip will give you the highlights but if you want to truly immerse yourself then a camping trip for a few days will allow you to appreciate the Canyon in all its varied glory. The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited and most frequently photographed sights in the world but any pictures you may have seen will rarely do justice to this incredible place. A trip here will be an unforgettable highlight of any trip to the States.
