If your thoughts are already turning to the Christmas break, why not push the boat out and spend the festive season somewhere hot and sunny?

Perennial favourites with travellers hailing from the UK at Christmas are the wonderful Canary Islands. Boasting an impressive 1,500 kilometres of lovely coastline, the islands are hot all year round and are very much in tune with the needs of holidaymakers. In December you should certainly experience temperatures in the mid-20s, although the nights can be cool, so do pack accordingly. The islands have an imposing volcanic landscape, although in parts they are surprisingly green.

If you really fancy pushing the boat out, then why not consider Australia as the destination for your Christmas celebrations? While we Brits shiver and gather round roaring log fires on the big day, the Aussies are barbecuing on the beach and cooling off with a dip in the beautiful blue sea. It’s likely to be at least 30 degrees during the Christmas season, so you will be celebrating in your swimsuit, in stark contrast to the more usual layers of knitwear.

Experience the charm of a traditional souk, or dip your toe in one of the exclusive shopping districts - the choice is yours. If you yearn to be pampered, you will find yourself spoilt for choice in terms of gorgeous holistic spas that are a feature of most of the hotels in Dubai.

Thailand is an incredibly popular destination in the winter months, and it’s not hard to see why. Well deserving of its assumed name ‘The Land of Smiles’, Thailand has a reputation for the friendliness of its inhabitants, and the service in the hotels is second to none.

December is summertime in the region and is the perfect month to go on safari. Active visitors will be delighted by the wealth of activities on offer, so if you are hoping for a Christmas break that is packed full of adventure, South Africa is well worth considering.
