If you are already pining for the sun as the nights draw in, there are plenty of locations near to home that will be able to satisfy your wish this October, and at a great price.

The majority of the Mediterranean remains sunny right through to the end of October, and the sea retains enough of its heat from the height of the summer to mean that swimming is still an option. Obviously, the further south you head, the warmer it will be. If you are craving full-on sun, though, you will need to commit to a long-haul flight.

It is essential to do your research before committing to a Mediterranean break in October. Many key tourist destinations will feel decidedly chilly at this time of year. Aim to head as far south as you can - perhaps to Turkey. You will find the daytime temperature here pleasantly balmy, although don’t forget to pack a light jumper or cardigan for the evenings, as the mercury could well drop significantly as night falls.

The best Greek island at this time of year is Crete, being the most southerly. Cyprus is another good bet for October sun, and for some truly outstanding deals head to the north of the island.

Another sunny island is Sicily, which boast great beaches and azure seas plus a whole host of fascinating historical sights to visit. Hire a car and take a jaunt to the gorgeous ancient port town of Syracuse or to pretty Taormina, which sits in the shadow of the famous Mount Etna.

Sunshine city breaks are also very much worth considering during the autumn months, with fewer tourists than at the height of summer and more pleasant conditions in which to sightsee. Palma (Majorca), Dubrovnik (Croatia) or Sorrento (Amalfi Coast) all combine plenty to see and do with ideal temperatures.

There are some resorts on the Mediterranean which are actually nicer to visit after the intense heat of the height of summer has passed. For example, Andalucía cools right down during October but is still hot enough to make the most of the beautiful beaches, as well as a spot of exploring. If you hope to spend some time away from it all on a deserted beach, your best bet is probably either Puglia in southern Italy or the pretty Costa de le Luz in Spain.

And, of course, just a little further afield is wonderful Marrakesh with its reliable climate and wealth of culture and history. If you like to shop in the sunshine, this is most definitely the location for you.
