If you're about to start planning your next holiday, you may feel somewhat overwhelmed by all the choices out there.

However, planning should and can be an enjoyable part of your holiday experience as a whole, and by following a few simple rules of thumb, everyone should be able to identify the perfect trip for them, whatever their personal preference.

Firstly, think about exactly you hope to get out of your holiday. Because travel is so easy these days, we can fall into the trap of considering the destination first, but it’s a good idea to think outside the box and identify first what sort of break you are craving.

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, think about how you like to relax. Lying on a beach? Going to the spa? Or do you prefer a more active approach, exploring a new city, for example, or immersing yourself totally in a foreign culture? Once you have identified which experiences you hope to have while you are away from home, you will find it far simpler to identify a destination that ticks all your boxes.

Conversely, if you enjoy trying new things and keeping busy during your time away, you could consider fulfilling one of your dreams - whatever it may be. These days, the world really is your oyster.

It is also really important to consider the needs of any travelling companions that you may have. Travelling with young kids will inevitably be a very different experience to trekking solo through the rainforest or youth-hostelling with a couple of friends. There are so many options that it makes sense to consider this well in advance of booking anything, as different people look to get very different things out of a holiday, and you must try to ensure that everyone is happy with the overall plan.

One great way of formulating a plan for your holiday is to identify the best bits of previous trips away and make sure you have these elements in your planned break. What was the best holiday you ever had? What made it so memorable and special? It might have been the people you went with; it may have been the destination itself or the amazing experiences you had while away. Would it be possible to replicate the highlights and build in some similar parameters into your forthcoming trip?

The main thing to recognise is that everyone has their own distinct ideas about what factors combine to make the perfect holiday, and once you have analysed your own needs, the booking of your dream trip will be just a couple of clicks of the mouse away.
