If you were watching the US election coverage last week then you could not have failed to hear a mention or two of the crucial swing state, Ohio. We thought it was a good time then to give this Mid-Western state a further fifteen minutes of fame by exploring what it has to offer to travellers.

Getting to Ohio is easy. The state is served by several international airports including Port Columbus International Airport near the state's capital, Columbus. Once there, an extensive network of highways enables easy access to the rest of the state. It's the 35th largest state in the US and most parts are reachable in under five hours of driving. The Greyhound bus service is also a popular choice for getting around.

The state has many areas of natural beauty including its one and only national park, Cuyahoga Valley and the stunning Lake Erie, which the state borders. On Lake Erie visit the Islands which are extremely picturesque and feature plenty to entertain including restaurants and scenic marinas. In Holmes County in mid-Ohio, the Amish population, the largest in the world, play host to several Amish tourist attractions for those interested in finding out about their way of life. The Lakes in the area are surrounded by beaches too for days lazing in the sun. There are several state parks too offering plenty of opportunity to get active from golf to mountain biking, kayaking and hiking. Or, if you prefer a more sedentary pursuit, fishing opportunities are aplenty.

The state was the birthplace of astronaut Neil Armstrong and he is celebrated in the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta. A great pilgrimage site for fans of space exploration. Armstrong isn't the state's only claim to fame either. Pioneers of air travel the Wright Brothers found their home in Dayton, in South West Ohio. In the far North of the state lies Cleveland, known as one of the most liberal of the US states. This is said to be the Rock and Roll Capital of the World so certainly one to add to the itinerary of music lovers. It also plays home to one of the largest collections of art and culture institutions in the country so no shortage of diversions for culture vultures to explore.

Ohio brings together plenty for the traveller to explore from vast scenic spaces of natural beauty to modern city living with nightlife, theme parks and attractions. With easy routes in and out of the state, it's certainly worth a visit on any trip to the US.
