As winter starts to draw near, the thoughts of many keen travellers will turn to exploring colder climes. There's something about Finland that is compelling at this time of year - with its pure air and uniquely vital spirit. Whether you yearn to explore the fascinating capital Helsinki, or venture into the vast, remote and staggeringly beautiful wilderness that makes up the majority of the country, you will find that Finland has everything you could possibly want in a destination.

Winter has a special charm, with thoughts of Christmas never far away.

Activities include skiing of all description and snowmobiles and husky teams are a common sight. The sun has a peculiarly pale quality towards the end of the year, which makes for a magical atmosphere and you may even by lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis are darkness falls - a sight that once seen will never be forgotten.

There are a huge number of delightful towns and villages to visit, all of which come with festive charm as standard. Whether quirky wooden churches, surprisingly modern design flourishes or fascinating museums are your thing, you’ll find them here in spades, plus cosy cafes and a hip, chic nightlife scene - particularly in and around Helsinki.

The Finns have a well-deserved reputation for friendliness and loyalty, and this is an extremely welcoming country where nothing is too much trouble.

Finland’s most famous wilderness encompasses Lapland. For many visitors, this mysterious extremity is what defines Finland - a captivating arctic land where the sun shines day and night during the all too brief summer, and is dark round the clock in the winter - the perfect time to witness the Northern Lights. During the autumn, the landscape is defined by an astonishing display of seasonal colour encompassing reds, golds and russets, and from October you will be witness to the eerie ‘Kaamos’ - an intriguing blue toned light that lasts for several weeks.

There are a whole myriad of ways to experience this wonderful landscape.

During the winter you can take a ride with the famous husky dogs, watch reindeer racing, go ice fishing, ski and take an exhilarating snowmobile ride through the densely green forests. There is an equal choice of activities during the summer too - this is prime time for keen hikers and rafters, illustrating that Finland really is an all-round destination that will appeal to people of all ages. You will only be limited by the depth of your pockets!
