The wonderful island of Tenerife has evolved in recent years into a super-chic destination of gorgeous beaches, top-end hotels, fine restaurants, great golf and hip nightlife. Tenerife is a destination that really does tick all the boxes whether you are travelling as a family, a couple or on your own.

The most famous resorts on the island are probably Playa de las Americas, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. Within easy reach of these well-established tourist hot spots you will find a whole plethora of the most charming villages and towns. These include El Medano with its endless golden beach so beloved of windsurfers and Los Abrigos, a quintessentially Canarian fishing community packed with seafood restaurants that serve the freshest and most delicious fruits of the sea.

The sun shines all year round in Tenerife, making it absolutely ideal for keen golfers. Several resorts are built around the sport - such as Amarilla Golf and Golf del Sur. Boasting top class gold courses, these resorts also offer everything else the golfer could possibly wish for on a relaxing holiday - with entertainment bars and restaurants all conveniently located on site.

Further round the coast to the west you will stumble upon the stunning town of Los Gigantes. This is surely one of the most dramatic spots on the entire island, with its looming cliffs and towering mountainous background and the views for miles around are simply spectacular.

To the north, the resort of Puerto de la Cruz is the main highlight. This was the first area to be developed for tourists and was created from the main harbour on the island. Here you will see glimpses of the Tenerife of long ago - with the cannons that defended the harbour in years gone by still visible.

Another fascinating historical setting is to be found at Garachico, which is not a resort per se, but more of a typical Spanish enclave - with its vast colonial-style houses set amongst pretty narrow streets that were once lapped by the lava from the last eruption of Mount Teide back in 1909.

For a real insight into life on Tenerife, head to the capital - Santa Cruz. This chic, cosmopolitan, bustling heart of the island hosts one the largest and most colourful carnivals in the entire world and is the main docking point for the many cruise ships that stop off at Tenerife. The capital is the soul of the island, and is a location that is not to be missed.
