Brazil is very much at the centre of world attention at the moment, with the world cup looming and the Olympic Games following shortly afterwards. Rio de Janeiro will be seeing a great deal of the action, but if you want to visit before the crowds really start to descend, why not book a last minute break this Easter?

While there is an incredible amount to do and see in this wondrous place, here are our top picks:

Visit Corcovado - one of the most stunning installations in the entire world, this magnificent statue sits atop the highest hill, surveying the city below. It is currently undergoing cleaning in preparation for the Olympics, but is still open to visitors, and nothing can spoil that view.

Another amazing vista is to be found from the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Accessed via cable car, from here you can take in the wonder of Rio’s setting in the wider environment - rivers, sea, hills and valleys. The views are simply beautiful.

Hit the beach at Ipanema or Copacabana for a true taste of relaxed Brazilian life. Famous for the huge amount of beach vendors selling everything except the kitchen sink - from delicious food, refreshing drinks to beach wear and souvenirs, the beaches are a vibrant place to hang out and get a tan whilst enjoying a true taste of local colour.

Whilst in Rio you absolutely must make take a boat trip. One of the beast way to appreciate the beauty of the coastline, with its endless golden beaches, is from out at sea. The marina is second to none and boat trips are frequent and well-priced. Whether you board a bargain sightseeing trip or charter a private yacht, you will be able to truly appreciate the wonders of this fabulous city from the azure blue waters that surround it.

Rio de Janeiro has a unique atmosphere that has to be experienced to be believed. The scenery is beautiful, as are the people, and there is a real rhythm to the city, a vibe that is quintessentially Brazilian. Through day and night, the city is full of life, music, laughter and dance. Whether you have come to relax on the beach or explore the city and further afield, you will always be made to feel right at home. There is no better place to be than Rio at sunset, cocktail in hand, simply watching the vibrant people of this magical city go about their business.
