After the excitement of Christmas, many families are starting to plan a sunshine getaway for February half term, hoping to break up the monotony of our long winter. This year, after the flood conditions that have affected much of the country, bookings are at an all-time high. Be careful before rushing to book anything. Many Mediterranean destinations have yet to warm up at this time of year so ideally you need to factor in travelling further afield to get guaranteed sunshine to. It is simply question of balancing your budget, and of course, how long a flight you are willing to undertake with your children. If you are craving the sun, there is still time to grab a bargain in one of the following locations renowned for their appealing February climates.

Canary Islands

The Canaries are great for families and have a climate similar to summer in the UK. Under five hours away, the flight is not too taxing and there are a variety of resorts to choose from. Lanzarote is best families with younger children with its miles of golden beaches and safe bathing. Fuerteventura is ideal for those seeking an active break, as it has great windsurfing. For those families with teenagers looking for buzzing nightlife, Tenerife is your best bet.


The weather is not as stable as the Canaries, yet Cyprus still has a great deal to offer the February half term traveller. It is certainly the Mediterranean destination with the best weather at this time of year, with a maximum daily temperature of around 61F. Cyprus is a stunningly beautiful island, with plenty to do even on the occasional rainy day.


Dubai is very much a 'marmite' destination. What is irrefutable though is the fantastic climate in February – with a top temperature in the high 70'sF. The flight time is around seven hours, but balanced with the guaranteed sunshine and very little chance of rain, you may conclude it's worth it.


Florida is top of the wish list of most children, and visiting in February means you will avoid the intense heat of the summer months. At this time of year the temperature is a balmy 72F, rain is infrequent and there is a cooling breeze. Many of the hotels in Florida are set up to cater exclusively for families, making it well worth the nine hour flight to get there.


February is the height of the peak season in the Caribbean, so you may be hard pushed to find an affordable option at short notice. However there are still a few good deals to be had, so if you can face the nine hour flight, it is well worth looking for a last minute bargain. The beauty of resorts such as Montego Bay in Jamaica is hard to beat, and a world away from the freezing temperatures we are facing at home this winter.
