Savvy ski lift operators in the resort of Les Gets have come up with a clever way to modernize the traditional skiing holiday experience. They have invented an app. It is called SPOT-LA and is free to download. Most skiers will take their smartphone with them when they hit the pistes, not least to use the camera to take all those happy pictures at the summit. Recognising our insatiable appetite for sharing such pictures on social media is they key to coming up with the new app. Among its features are all sorts of key facts about the mountains, the terrain, the facilities, but the real fun is in the interactive element.

On the app there are 6 courses, two are for walkers and the other four are for snowboarders and skiers. The snow sports challenges are expected to take between one and a half to three hours to complete depending on ability, how long you take to get the answers and how often you stop for a quick gluwein. Better skiers do not have an advantage as it is not based on speed on skis. It is competitive though and there are seriously good prizes to be won.

As an example, you might be told to use your ski pole to draw a picture of a snowflake and then take a picture of it. The picture goes to the app jury who then decide how many points it is worth. The app will go on to set the next clue in the treasure hunt. It might say, go to the chairlift that is 30 feet to your left and then get off at the top and go straight to the pine tree where another clue is waiting. Your position is tracked by GPS technology.

There is no limit on the times you can attempt each course and the organizers hope that holidaymakers will enjoy them so much they will want to do them several times. To complete the inter-activeness of the appy holiday, the fun does not stop when you come off the slopes. Throughout the village will be more clues dotted about for the eagle-eyed to spot. An example might be a poster on the door to the museum with a bar code on it, scan that, send to the jury and you have more points. A leader-board will be constantly updated on the internet. So, even when you have left the resort you could still be in the running for top prizes if you leave with a high score.

The best prize is a holiday for 4 to, where else, Les Gets. The resort have capitalized on their major assets in the design of the app, sending players to the top of Mount Cheny, a prime spot for photos with Mont Blanc in the background. They also get directed to the new video park where all skiers can get filmed for free, racing through the slalom gates like regular World Cup qualifiers.

Les Gets are the only resort to be doing this so far, but it sounds like such fun and such a great idea, that imitations are almost bound to crop up across the Alps. The app is available for download from December 20.
