Head to the Hamptons – It's Doctor's Orders We've all heard tales of A list celebrities and the hoy polloy of American society spending their summer days at The Hamptons and it all sounds thoroughly glamorous. This year though the area has received an added seal of approval for one of its beaches. The self-styled Dr Beach has listed Main Beach in East Hampton as the number one beach in America according to his strict scientific criteria.

Dr Beach is otherwise known as Dr Stephen Leatherman is the Professor and Director for Coastal Research at Florida International University and there is very little this highly experienced environmental scientist doesn't know about the sea shore. Each year in his guise as Dr Beach, Dr Leatherman releases his list of the top ten beaches in the US based on criteria of 50 different factors.

Among the criteria that can make or break a beach's position on the list are physical elements such as the colour of the sand with lush tan being the most desirable and grey being less so. The material the beach is made up of whether cobbles or soft sand is also a factor, while where there is sand; its softness also forms part of the rating. Environmental factors are also high on the agenda with evidence of sewerage or excessive algae in the sea an issue to mark a beach down. Of course a dreamy view is always a popular attraction for a beach resort so the vistas, far and near, are also counted and woe betide any beach whose sea is not a rich aqua blue as anything less can mean a mark down.

When it came to Main Beach in East Hampton, New York, Dr Beach's diagnosis was that this beach was 'idyllic' and that the beach with its 'great team of lifeguards' was extremely safe for swimmers and bathers alike. Most wouldn't expect anything less of the beach that is rated by A-listers as a top beach getaway.

While scenes of surfers enjoying sun, sand and sea are synonymous with California on the West Coast, none of the state's beaches made it to the top ten this year despite Coronado Beach in San Diego being the number one last year.

Hawaii with its Kahanamoku Beach can second on the 2013 list and the state also scooped position number four and five while Florida also saw three beach success stories.

Dr Beach's full top ten beaches in the United States are:
